We begin by saying thank you to the members of Local 1568 both active and retired that assisted with brother Bob Witte’s campaign efforts for Brookland Supervisor. Tuesday night we witnessed some very strong political shifts in both state and local elections. Bob ran a hard fought campaign winning his June primary and unfortunately our efforts did not yield a victory in the November election. Again, Local 1568 and Bob extends our sincere appreciation to everyone that helped over the past several months.
In the weeks ahead leading up to the January 2018 General Assembly session, we intend to reach out to the newly elected officials to further advance safety and improved work conditions for you, the membership. At the state level, we will continue working with the Virginia Professional Firefighters to promote improved cancer presumption coverage, mental health awareness, and other fire / EMS related legislative topics. At the local level, we are reaching out to Board of Supervisor elect Mrs. Courtney Lynch to begin paving the way for a positive relationship with Local 1568. We look forward to improving our presence at the local level with increased involvement in our ever-growing Henrico County. Increased economic development is leading to increased service delivery needs. Our fire administration is making significant proposals to keep up with our service demands. New stations, possible new EMS delivery systems, and even to our dislike sometime...significant technology advancements. We will continue to advocate and work for you, the membership, to promote safe work conditions promoting health and wellness programs, improved work facilities and equipment, and working to improve the livelihood of our membership.
In the past several months we have made changes to give each member access to monthly meetings and build upon our membership recruitment. Monthly meetings are now held the first Wednesday evening of each month at 7:30 p.m. and Thursday mornings at 8:30 a.m. at 908 E. Nine Mile Rd (old firehouse #3). We also recently voted to complete a bylaw amendment to remove the lengthy back pay of dues for members that may have withdrawn or never joined during the first two years of employment. Please share this information with fellow DOF brothers and sisters that might be considering joining Local 1568. In the upcoming months we intend to roll out a revised Shop Steward program in an effort to improve communication at the station level. For more information about the Shop Steward program, membership applications, or any other Union concerns, please feel free to email Secretary/Treasurer Nathan Weinstein or myself.
