This week myself, President Vick, and VP Whaley attended the 2018 VPFF Legislative Conference. The short and sweet of it is this...the VPFF and Locals around the state are putting 100% of our legislative efforts into getting our Cancer Presumption bills passed this session. Virginia should be embarrassed at our current presumption laws and the process that they put our members through in order to get coverage. The VPFF has made it very clear that the time is over of politicians riding our coattails and then not supporting us when we have been fighting for years to get better cancer presumption laws passed.
Please contact your state senators and delegates and ask them to support the following bills: SB 642, SB 352, HB 1245, and HB 472. Keep it short and sweet and ask that they support those bills (for whichever appropriate chamber they are in) and let them know that Virginia's firefighters are counting on them!
Just for your FYI...the VPFF did a study and found that with these new proposed bills, we would only see an increase of 0.9 cancer presumption claims per year. The financial burden is very minimal, so that is not a valid argument. Please spread the word to family, friends, etc and help get the word out. VP Whaley will be sending updates as the session goes on and we will let you know when the bills will be heard. We need to pack the room so when they vote, they have to look us in the eye.
